Jessie The Coyote
A wild coyote in Wisconsin.
Who is Jessie the coyote? Jessie is a young coyote who came from the wild, and found himself wandering into a zoo.
Jessie is a fictional character from my book A Coyote Who Wished He Lived In A Zoo. However, I was inspired to write about the character when I saw a lone coyote standing on the side of the road in Wisconsin. He seemed to be pretty brave. He watched for traffic, then crossed the street while I parked my car on the other side of the road to take this picture. He hung out behind my car, sniffing the ground. I watched him for a while until he disappeared into the woods. I was very surprised to see a young coyote who was not afraid of my car standing only a few feet away from him. My window was slightly opened and I knew he could hear me talk with my mother as she sat next to me in amazement. Could it be that this coyote was familiar with the presense of humans and vechicles within his enviorment?
The answer I believe is yes. More than likely, humans saw this lone coyote on the side of the road and tossed out food for him. He may have found this rewarding, and does it often, which in turn, lessens his fear of humans and vehicles.
Feeding wildlife can be very dangerous to the animal. He could get hit by a car, eat foods that may make him sick, or poisonend, or a hunter may take advanced of the animal being so close and shoot him. It is also dangerous for a person who may decide to hand feed him and get bitten or attacked by the animal. It is never a good idea to feed or pet a wild animal. Please don't do it. The animal is better off eating his own food in the wild.
